A spreadsheet I created to compare gear ratios with different setups and compute speed for a combination of cadence and gears. And here is the accompanying writeup that explains it in English.
A small writeup on how the bike GPS units work.
An Amazon Listmania list with links to cycling accessories I can't live without. (But try and support your local bike shop!)
If you design your own rides in the Westchester/Fairfield area, here is a Google Map with food stops that are on often traveled bike routes.

Scarsdale Ball Bearings
(or should that be Bald Bearings?)
Below are some rides you may enjoy in Westchester County and surrounding areas. The list of rides below is sorted by departure point - Scarsdale on top, and the rest in alphabetical order.
Cue sheets are available in two formats - Excel and Adobe Acrobat (pdf). Click on the one you want. Some of my aging friends prefer the Excel version so they can print the cue sheet larger ;-)
The "RideWithGPS" link will bring you to a map and other data for each route on the Ride With GPS website. Ride With GPS will give you their estimate for the total elevation gain on the ride and an elevation map of the ride. Hovering the mouse over any point in the elevation map will display the steepness of the climb at that point. As you move the mouse around the map route, the elevation map will note your location as well.
If you own a Garmin bike GPS you can download a gpx file of the ride for importing into your Garmin for turn by turn directions. Click on the "Export" tab. If you have a Garmin 205, 305, or 500, use the top GPX link notated "GPX Route." If you have a 605 or 705 use the second link notated "GPX Track". Use the "+" and "-" buttons on the map on either site to zoom in and out, and use the arrows to move left/right or up/down.
Have fun!

The elevation gain/loss data in the third column is not lowest to highest elevation, but the total elevation gain (equal to the elevation loss on a ride that starts and ends in the same place) over the course of the ride. Note: This data is from Garmin's elevation database. Elevation data can vary widely based on whether it uses an onboard altimeter (Garmin 705, which I don't use), a periodic data that a unit without an altimeter receives from the gps signal, or from vendor to vendor as they use different databases with different degrees of fineness in the numbers. The entire concept of total elevation gain is a dicey one. A "more accurate" database that captures the elevation change every yard of movement will give a larger and arguably more accurate number, but in undulating terrain these elevation gains are imperceptable on the bike, and don't make the ride any harder.
In all cases I have used the Garmin database, using the "Elevation Corrections Enabled" option, so that the data is consistent from ride to ride. There is no "real" number, the value is in a comparison between the rides.
Elevation as a % of total distance in the fourth column is the total elevation gain divided by the ride length in feet. This gives you a good idea of how hilly the ride feels independent of total distance.
I use the Garmin 605 for recording the rides, and map out the routes on the Ride With GPS site and download the GPX to the 605 for turn by turn directions. The 605 (and 705) have now been replaced by the new Edge 800.
